Can you do laser eye surgery if you wear contacts?
Q. I heard that wearing contacts damages / cuts / weakens the main muscle that is worked on when you get laser eye surgery. If i wear contacts for the next 5 or 6 years, can i still do laser eye surgery? provided i am of reccomended age?
A. Yes you can. Your eyes will change a lot until you reach the age of 25 or so and then they will tend to stabilize whether you wear contacts or not. The only thing that can really weaken a muscle is bad nutrition. Many people go from wearing contacts to getting the procedure done. You will have to wear glasses for a short period before getting tested and the surgery, but that's about it.
good luck to you

How is eye surgery done on a baby?
Q. my 8 month old has to have eye surgery in the next few months. We have tried all other options and this is our last resort. My question is how is eye surgery done? Will she be put completely to sleep, have to stay in the hospital? Thanks
She has a lazy eye. They have tried glasses and the patch and her eye is getting worse.

A. Can i have the type of surgery the infant will receive?
Basically what they will do is shorten, lengthen or change the postion of the extraocular muscles. These muscules are what moves the eye. Strabismus surgery is a one day procedure. The patient only spends few hours in the hospital with minimal preoperative preparation. The average duration of the surgery is variable according to the number of muscles operated. On average, every muscle operated takes 10-15 minutes. Before the surgery, your child will have a special "sleep medicine" called a general anaesthetic. This will make sure your child sleeps through the operation and does not feel any pain. Your child will have a patch and some redness and swelling after the operation but that will subside later on.
Since it's being fixed early your infant shouldn't have any serious vision problems that can occur later on which is great.
I hope everything works out for you and your child.
Good Luck :)

Is there a respected optometrist who does eye lid surgery in Mendocino,Lake or Sonoma counties in California?
Q. I am looking for an optometrist who performs eye lid surgery for an eye lid with a "lazy" muscle located in one of the 3 counties in California, Mendocino, Lake or Sonoma.
A. You need an ophthalmologist for that. If you don't have a regular eye doctor and haven't had a routine exam in over a year, you should get one done and then he/she will be able to recommend an ophthalmologist who can provide that service to you.
What is the name of this eye surgery?
Q. I'm looking for information on a specific type of eye surgery but I can't remember the name of it to look it up. I believe it's where they go in and cut a nerve or something so that that eye is the same as the other eye. The reason for the surgery is for people who have diplopia (double vision) and/or amblyopia (lazy eye). Once that nerve or whatever is cut, the eye will focus and move the same as the other eye. Does anyone know what the name of this surgery is?
A. Noooo they don't cut any nerve. They correct misalignment of the extraocular muscles. It is called Strabismus surgery. Approximately 1.2 million procedures done every year.
