Why can eye surgery possibly disqualify you from being a pilot in the military?

Q. I read today that getting eye surgery can possibly disqualify you from being a pilot. Does anybody know why??? I don't see why it's a problem.

A. A number of reasons.

1) It means you have less then perfect eyes. Not vision necessarily but eye problems are serious for a pilot and the military is not going to invest millions of dollars towards training for someone with faulty eyes that could go faulty again.

2) If you have had surgery then the eye is weaker at the point of the surgery and when you are working in an environment were you pull multiple G's and can potentially be placed into a non-pressurized environment there is always the very real possibility the eye could rupture.

LASIK Eye Surgery and than becoming a pilot ?
Q. Hi guys,
My eye vision is 2.25 L and 2.00R. I would like to do this Lasik eye Surgery so than I can see everything without needing a specs. My question is, is this possible to do and can I still become a Pilot or will I have problems later in Life ?
Thanks.

A. YES DON'T DO LASIK!!!!! You will ruin your military flying career!! PRK is the only authorized corrective surgery for pilots. I am going to flight school myself and have researched like crazy! Current prices are around $3500 for both eyes. The military also requires one year healing time after surgery; so plan accordingly! Good Luck!

can i get eye surgery to become a military pilot?
Q. i wish to become a helicopter/fixed wing pilot/navigator.

1) is it true that any kind of corrective eye surgery disqualifies you? even for US Army helicopter pilot?

2) which one would be a better choice? rotary wing or fixed wing?

3) whats the process to becoming a flight officer? i want to go through the ROTC program during college

thank you for all answers!
which service should i fly with if i could choose?

A. 1. That is not true. You are not disqualified, it is waiverable.

2. For Army Aviation, you must first complete rotary wing training & based on needs of the Army, MAY get fixed wing transition. THIS IS RARE. Most apply for fixed wing transition later on in their flying career.

3. ROTC is a good way to go, but doesn't necessarily guarantee you will get flight training. If you want to become a helicopter pilot, a good way to do it is to go Warrant Officer. You can apply for WOFT (warrant officer flight training) as a civilian & if selected will go to Basic Training, Warrant Officer Candidate School & Flight Training. This will guarantee your spot in the flight program.

Here is a link to check out, it goes over some requirements:

How old should you be to get Lasik Eye surgery done?
Q. I am 20 years old. I've had glasses since i was about 16 or 17. I am seriously looking into Lasik eye surgery because i hate wearing my glasses ( i am near sighted)

Recently it seems as though my eyes have gotten worse. My glasses work fine when i have them on, but i've been noticing that when i dont wear them, its getting harder & harder to see things i once could.

Question is, how old are you supposed to be to get this done? If i get it done now, and say a year or two down the road it starts getting worse again do they do 'free touch ups?'

Also, if anyone knows, how does sitting in front of a computer affect your eyes? I'm a writer, so i spend plenty of time in front of the screen.

Thanks!
Also, how do i find a Lasik eye specialist near me..and how do i know they are legit & safe?

A. well i will tell you that my wife had this done last year. she was 20 years old. i have also had this done(i was 23). we see great and have for the last year even while out in iraq. we are both military and had it done for free. what im really posting about is to tell you the you should look more into P.R.K. than lasik. its was safer, less time, and less problems down the road. as far as where to get it done just start calling around.
