What age is a good age for corrective eye surgery?

Q. I really want corrective eye surgery(glasses my whole life, contacts never worked, etc.), but I'm afraid my eyes are still growing. (I guess a side question would be, when do eyes stop growing?) What age is a good age for corrective eye surgery? I've heard various things, like right after puberty to age 24. Please give a straight, informed answer, not the first result in a search. I really appreciate any help! Thank you!

A. One should typically wait til about mid-20's. Most MD's look for at least 3 yrs of stable vision. The eyes will continue to grow til usually mid to late teens. At infancy, the length of the eyeball is between 17-18 mm and the average adult eyeball is ~24 mm in length. Puberty is typically when the prescription of the eyes change the most. The person has a big growth spurt and grows many inches, the eye lengthens (grows too, but not by big #'s) and you become more nearsighted. Everyone's different, but most people stabilize in mid-20's. Thus, LASIK is best then.

Heads up though, you'll still need reading glasses in your 40's! Everyone does!

What is the age limit for lasik eye surgery?
Q. I heard you shouldn't have the surgery until your body's completely finished growing, like age 23 or something. Is there a prime age for this surgery? If you get it in your 20s will you have to get it again in your 60s?

A. Hi Namsen 90% of patients between the age of 18 and 65 who are either nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism, are excellent candidates for the procedure. So there really isnt a prime age for LASIK. Patients can typically have the procedure starting at the age of 18. By this age the eyes are done growing and changing so laser eye surgery can be performed safely. If you are 17 years old you could still be a candidate, but youll need parental consent.

LASIK is a permanent procedure. For the vast majority of patients, one treatment is all they need to correct common refractive errors. However, LASIK will not prevent natural age-related regression within the eye like presbyopia, the common eye condition which requires most people in their 40s even those who have had LASIK to start wearing reading glasses.

What is the youngest age you can be to get eye surgery?
Q. ok first of all let me say i'm nearsighted. like really really really nearsighted. i have really bad eyes. now i was wondering whats the youngest age i can be to get eye surgery? i've heard of lasik but are there any other surgeries??

A. Ask your opthamologist.
I don't know about surgeries OTHER than Lasik, but I'm sure it should all be the same: You need to be at an age where your eyes are no longer changing. And by changing, I don't mean prescription wise, I mean they're not still morphing or growing or changing shape. Because that makes it easier for your vision to go back to the way it was extremely soon after surgery.

The age will be different for everyone. My doctor told me I can get Lasik when I'm twenty-four. My best friend got it when he was twenty-seven. And my math teacher got Lasik at thirty. So I'm guessing the age range is in the twenties.

But make sure to ask your doc for YOUR exact age!

Does Lasik eye surgery work and does it have any bad side effects?
Q. Since im Joining the infantry to train as a sniper i will need good vision but unfortunately like a lot of people im slightly nearsighted and might be getting lasik to correct this But i have heard of side effects such as dry eyes etc.... i would like to know if it is worth and and are their really any bad side effects?

A. Yes, Lasik eye surgery works, and is worth it. There are possible side effects, but most can be avoided by choosing a trustworthy doctor. For example, people with large pupils can get a halo effect an night. This can be avoided by not getting Lasik if you have large pupils.
Also, keep in mind that there are other eye surgeries that may be better for you. I didn't have Lasik, I had PRK. With Lasik, there is generally a scar where they cut the cornea (this can cause the halo effect when your pupils open wider at night). After having PRK 12 years ago, every eye doctor I've seen has remarked that he could not tell by examining my eyes that I had the surgery. PRK is just as effective as Lasik, but the healing time is longer. Good luck.
