i'm 18 yrs old and have really really really bad eyes,my power for my eyes are a +4.25. i heard that you have to be 24 to get eye surgery but is this true. my mom is 50 and my eyes are worse then hers and she has really bad eyes. i don't want to go blind by my 30th birthday. if i was able to get eyes surgery what would happen 10 or 20 years later would i go blind or start losing my sight again. is it possible to go blind during surgery. thanks!!!

The age for conventional lasik is 18, but customvue lasik you have to be 21. For any lasik, your eyes need to be stable at least a year before they will allow you to have it. I'm sure you won't go blind by the time you are 30..... Some people need a lasik enhancement later on in their life due to natural eye changes. Nobody has every gone blind from having lasik done. The biggest risk is infection. I had customvue lasik a month ago and it was well worth the money. Good luck!

That sucks! I work at a LASIK center in San Jose, CA and Pleasanton, CA.

It takes 3 months for your vision to stabilize. So it may just be that. Some patients don't see 20/20 within the first day w/LASIK. Some take 24-48 hours to notice improvement. Hopefully you were given eye drops to use after surgery - antibiotics (use for 5 days afterwards), anti-inflammatory(also 5 days afterwards), and artificial tears (for 1 month after) to use.

I hope you did not go to a "bargain center" for surgery. I know those $499/eye sounds appealing and definitely affordable but those are usually Dr's who are just starting out and need to gain the experience. Even centers that offer "lifetime guarantees" are a joke as most of them won't even be around 5-10 years later when you will need something.

Lasik can correct eyes to be perfect. There are risks though. I know 4 people who have had it. For 3 it was a success for the 4th a disaster. Lasik corrects your eyesight as it is so if your eyes get worse later you're back to glasses. That is why they want you in your early twenties as typically your eyesight keeps getting worse until then. As you are 13 surgery will have changed so much by the time you can have it that there is no point in thinking about it as it is at the moment. You may also have completely different options.

Why not look at contacts? You're old enough and modern contacts are wonderful. The only downside is teh expense. Could you discuss this with your parents.

There is no natural way to Improve eye sight. Dont fall for the advertising gimmicks.
Lasik works well for people with astigmatism.

Lasik is relatively a very safe procedure which has been performed for nearly a decade. The technology has advanced so much that its now possible to predict the outcome even before laser is done. The pre op Diagnostic Procedures are called as orbscan and abberometry.

Lasik procedure takes just 10 mins for both the eyes and you can resume normal activities within 24 hrs.

The only disadvantage is the cost of the procedure , but this can be over come when u have the procedure done in countries like India which have very good laser centers and Ophthalmologists.

Eye care tourism is becoming very popular and u can save a lot of money.

My vision was -5.75 and -4.10 last year and have not had a vision test since last year. I was considering getting Ortho K but I don't think my vision is good enough. What would be a good vision repair from an eye doctor for me, an eleven-year-old? (PLEASE do not say eat carrots)
I already wear contact lens...I meant something that can permanently improve your vision.

No doctor will do vision correction on an 11 year old because your vision does not stabilize until you are in your late teens or early 20s. Most places require you to be at least 18 and your prescription must not change for at least a year before you get the procedure. Your vision can be up to -12 and you can get lasik. I wouldn't worry about your vision. It isn't even that bad. Mine is -11 and -12 (that's legally blind in case you wanted to know) and most doctors are still confident that they can get me to 20/40 or 20/20 with lasik. Keep seeing your eye doctor once a year and do what he or she tells you. Contacts might help your vision if your parents and doctor decide you are old enough for them. Until then, you just need to be patient. I know it is hard. I am 24 and I still can't wait to get lasik, but it will be worth it to wait and get it when you meet all the criteria for successful surgery.

I am having a LASIK consultation this Friday, and I must admit, I am a little nervous about the imminence of someone (and something) messing with my eyes that way. I have been writing down all my questions for the doctor, and I have a few, but I am wondering what other people who have had this procedure in one or both eyes have experienced. How where you through the procedure itself? What about the results? Any side effects? Recovery time? And how are things years later for you?

I had my eye surgery almost 10 years ago and absolutely love it! I went from 20/400 to 20/10 vision, and my vision was clear the next day.

The initially attempted both eyes on the same day, but due to a mechanical error I had to go back the following week for a second surgery. I refused the sedative that was offered prior to my first surgery and later regretted it. I took it for the 2nd one and felt much more at ease.

I had no pain at all. My mom drove me to the surgery and she filled the prescription for pain killers, I finally threw the entire prescription out a few years ago, and never did use any of it.

I had to wear the funky sunglasses for a few weeks but it was all good. Drops into each eye several times a day, lots of rest, but nothing unusual.

When I go to my optometrist now, he is amazed that there is no scarring and that my vision seems to constantly get better and better. I have no halo lights at night, that seems to be a complaint of lots of patients.

I based my choice of surgeon on the only fellow in town who hadn't been sued for botching a surgery. The fellow I went to will only accept you as a patient if you have the potential for great success. He's a lot more expensive than some of the other surgeons, but aren't your eye's worth it?

ok so, being in the military, u r offered lots of benefits...one being, eye surgery (u know, like the LASIK). ive really been thinkin about doing it. and i do know that the surgery the military offers has a higher success rate than the actual LASIK, but of course there r still risks, possibilities....etc. does anyone have personal experience about how getting that surgery helped (or not helped) to better their lives?

4 weeks ago I spoke to a couple of friends who had had laser surgery . They say it was the best thing they had ever done. This spurred me on, together with looking at the statistics, and 3 wks ago I went for my free consultation.

I decided I wanted to go for the full thing, Wavefront and Intralase, thus avoiding sharp instruments, and using only lasers.

My prescription was mild R+1, L+0.75, so the cost was just over £2k

I am 41, and thought to myself, "Just trust the statistics, and be brave for 5 minutes, and you will enjoy the remainder of your life more."

So, Last Friday 7/3/08 was D-day. Got to Nottingham at 3pm and after a little wait - I was called in to do triple checks regarding facts and figures, and was taken in to the operating theatre.

Lay on the bed, nervous I had to admit, but took myself off to another place, and less than 5 minutes later both eyes were done. 10 minutes after that I was in a taxi home with sunglasses on, and thinking, "Wow, I did it".

I had always wanted it done, but never been in a financial position to do so. I was also concerned about the chances of things going wrong, but my friends successes filled me with great confidence.

No grittiness, tad sore a couple of hours later, but a couple of Ibuprofen and a half-decent night's sleep, and woke up more-or-less perfect.

Have a little night-glare at the mo, and a bit of bruising on the eyeballs, but both will get better in a couple of weeks.

The cost sounds expensive, but it pays for itself over the years, in not buying glasses every couple of years.

If your frightened don't be - surgeons (in this case Mr Bal Manoj - Google him) sit at the side of God.

As a sportsman (146 at snooker, 4 over at golf) I'm just glad to have my peripheral vision back, and can't wait to get back on the golf course.

PRK (a refractive surgery related to LASIK) on Rhesus monkeys created peripheral defocus that slowed or sped up myopia progression depending on the direction of defocus, as predicted.

This proves that monkeys who had laser eye surgery developed problems with their eyeballs changing shape later. The change in cornea shape triggered changes inside the eye and they could then develop further hyperopia/myopia in the years after surgery

No grittiness, tad sore a couple of hours later, but a couple of Ibuprofen and a half-decent night's sleep, and woke up more-or-less perfect.

Q. Like what do they do? Do they put a lazer up to your eye or what? What happens if you blink during the process? What if you move your head? I need answers!

A. I had Lasik 5 yrs ago. They put numbing drops in your eye first, then when they are working you lay down under the laser machine and they place a clamp on you eye to keep it open, it looks like a reverse eye lash curler. Then the Dr. cuts a flap on the cornea and lays it back, next he tells you to look at the red blinking light- this is when the laser starts its job and makes small incisions to let more refractive light into your eye. It takes from 30-60 seconds depending on your correction. Last the Dr. replaces the flap, queeges the flap flat so it reattaches, and WHOLA, you have 20/20. I did have to go back a year later because one eye needed a enhancement.
After care you go home sleep for 4 hrs, they want your eyes closed to start to heal. you wear protective shields in the shower and when you sleep for 10 days. Eye drops and lubrication daily for a couple of weeks. It was the best money I ever spent. Had glasses from child hood.
