Extra Terr

I just got lasik done on January 6th 2012 after i turned 20 my vision was very mild nearsightedness (myopia) meaning i couldnt see clearly too far prior to this i had an eye exam with my doctor an the glasses i got felt too strong i couldnt get use to them but he said it was spot on an they didnt up my prescription too much just equalized my eyes because the prescription before was a little weaker in the left eye but my contacts and glasses from three years ago worked perfectly still so my concern was did i get lasik too early or were my eyes basically stabilized i did it this early because i want to join the military and didnt want to have to deal with glasses on my face but now im freakin out wondering if the 20/20 results will stay or fade away in the next couple of years please serious answers only.

Answer
LASIK surgery does not last forever. As you get older, your eyes change. No one can guarantee how long it will last for though. Some people get the surgery and it can last for many, many years. For others, they could go back to wearing glasses/contacts in a few years.

Answer
There is a lot of evidence for waiting to do lasik until you are older. There are lots of studies linking deterioration (myopia) associated with prolonged, intense near vision work. If you are going to college, intensely using computers or other small devices, or doing other stressful near vision work, it is possible that your results could fade as you repeat whatever triggered your myopia in the first place.

Regarding the prescription: You can take the same set of numbers from a standard, extended exam and come up with three different prescriptions: 1) get the absolute maximum distance clarity possible (creating more visual distress when you do near work.) 2) get OK distance vision, but not too much (which is the way old, experienced eye docs prescribe.) 3) prescribe two lenses in one frame, one to give you adequately clear distance clarity, with a second lens in the bottom that is set to help do the focusing work when you are doing close up work. The third approach should also include a special pair of near vision glasses for long periods of computer or near vision work.

Very few recent graduates of optometry school, and almost no opthalmologists, will prescribe the third way. You will have to track down someone who does by using the doctor finder at oepf.org or covd.org. Even then, you will have to ask whether the will take the third approach.

I would say that if your vision deteriorated after months of doing near vision work as described--studying, computer, ipad, iphone or similar devices--then you are likely to see your vision get worse as you continue doing that kind of work. The myopia adaptation you suffered before is likely to be the same reaction you will have in the future if you continue doing the same kind of visual tasks.

I think of the kinds of supporting near prescriptions I described in this way. If you were going hiking, you wouldn't go barefooted, would you? You'd want to wear boots of some sort. Well, the lenses for near work are helper lenses to do some of the intense focusing work instead of your eyes. The lenses are like boots for your eyes as you hike through near vision work.

Hope this is helpful. It is too late to go back now, but I suggest that if you play any sports with a fast moving ball that you wear eye protection. For many people, lasik weakens the structure of the cornea (clear area of the eye) and being hit by a ball can create serious problems. Also be very careful about contact lenses--make certain that they will work for you. Many post lasik patients have dry eyes, which doesn't work with contacts.

Would I be a good Candidate for Lasik Eye Surgery?

I was diagnosed on August 15th 2012 with accommodative esotropia. I'm really self conscious about it still even though my doctor prescribed me glasses. I'm still wearing glasses but I feel as if they're not working at all. I did research and found out that lasik could be an alternative to glasses AND contacts. I play basketball and wearing glasses really gets in the way of it and my confidence. I know that lasik helps farsightednesss which is what I have. My eyes are still not straight with the glasses and I feel that my ophthalmologistt misdiagnosed me or maybe I just have regular esotropia OR partially accomdoative esotropia. WHAT DO I DO!!!
@djaca- where can I get a list of those seminars

I'm +2.5, +2.25 or +2.5, 2.75. I forgot but my left eye is the weaker one
@Emily According to my research, if my doctor's diagnosis is indeed correct and I do in fact have accomodative esotropia then my eye turning isn't a muscle problem; it's just a cause of the hyperopia.

Answer
LASIK most definitely corrects farsightedness, also known as hyperopia. But if your esotropia is caused from a muscle problem, then LASIK will not make your eyes "straight". Being young with a hyperopic prescription can cause your eyes to slightly cross, (accommodative esotropia), therefore getting LASIK surgery to get rid of the prescription will correct your problem. :)

^^ yes that is what I said, and LASIK corrects hyperopia, which can cause esotropia. But not everyone with esotropia is hyperopic. I was simply stating that there are different causes for it. For example, my best friend has accomodative esotropia from a muscle problem, but the only time it is noticable is when she is tired or drinking because the muscles relax even more and she cannot "accomodate" through it.

Lasik eye surgery? Prices in Michigan?

Candice S

Just looking for some accurate prices for this surgery...i have heard everything from 299 to 2000...so does anyone know of the prices in Michigan

Answer
Some national chains advertise Lasik prices as low at $299 an eye, but a look at the financial reports of those same chains will find what they really charge. The average Lasik cost in 2012 is about $1,950 per eye. The price of Lasik varies from about $1,600 to $3,200 per eye, depending on the surgeon and technology, according to David Harmon, president of the St. Louis research firm Market Scope. What is paid by an indivudal will depend greatly on the patient's unique circumstances, which procedure is recommended, and market competition.

Read: http://www.usaeyes.org/lasik/lasik-cost-price.htm

Nobody wants to pay too much for anything, but this is microsurgery on eyes. If the best available surgeon is unaffordable, then the wise choice may be to not have Lasik at all. An inexperienced doctor is no bargain at any price.

I went to my opthy physician.
I checked my both eyes
My right eye is -5.75
Left Eye sight is -5.15
In 2012 i was checked i have a right eye vision -5.00
left eye vision -4.31
Now i wear glassic but i feel aching in my head.
Don't know what i do?
Anywasy how i reverse back my vision?
If i do laser surgery then tell me which countries or hospital is good for me and my vision?
I hate glassic.simple.
I am 19 year old.

Answer
well -5.15 doesn't exist. neither does -4.31. not in glasses/contact lens Rx's anyway (research and surgical centers can take these kind of measurements but they won't show up in Rx's b/c they cannot be made)

you cannot "reverse" your vision or Rx.

you are not a candidate for laser eye surgery (LASIK) b/c your Rx is not "stable"...you're still getting worse.
