im 13 years old and i wear glasses and i dont want to wear it the rest of my fucking life i dont want contacts either . Tell me all the things about lasik eye surgery the disadvantages and the advantages. I know i cant get the procedure now but when im 20 i think and i saw a video of it . it cuts your cornea off or something and they put it back on???!?!? what if it falls off again like in spring when you have allergies and your eyes get raelly itchty . Also can this last the rest of your life or do you have to do something every other week and if you got lasik surgery i want to know ur experiences

Like any surgery there is an amount of risk involved with LASIK corrective eye surgery, but the advantages of having the procedure far outweigh the side effects for most people.

During the procedure what happens is the surgeon cuts a flap in your cornea and gently lifts it back to expose the middle part of your cornea (stroma). The laser is then used to reshape the stroma before the surgeon reseals the flap again. Don't worry it can't fall out, the surgeon doesn't cut it all the way off, and it naturally knits back together again.

There are always things to consider before getting the surgery done. Firstly, do you fall within the prescription ranges. Currently LASIK corrective surgery can work for patients who have a prescription up to -/+7.00, but this may change in the next 6-7 years. It doesn't last forever, unfortunately the life expectancy of any corrective surgery is around 7-10 years before you start feeling you need prescriptive help again and LASIK surgery is a one time thing only I'm afraid, because they cut so deep into the corneal tissue.

There are side effects with any surgery and corrective eye surgery is no different. Side effects can include;

Surgery induced dry eyes
Overcorrection (removing too much tissue from the stroma layer)
Undercorrection (not removing enough tissue from the stroma layer)
Halos or starbursts around light sources at night
Light sensitivity
Ghost images or double vision
Wrinkles in flap (striae)
Debris or growth under flap
Of course, these side effects are only seen in a small percentage of patients who have this done and aren't long term.

The FDA has found no long term side effects from having LASIK surgery.

I am planning to do a LASIK or Laser Eye Surgery, does it has any disadvantages doing it? and what is the difference between Laser and LASIK, which is better and why, I am hesitating whether to do it or not, also I don't know which one should I choose LASIK or Laser.

P.S. My vision is not so bad, it is something like 1.7 - 2 degrees deviation, am just sick wearing glasses. :)

LASIK stands for LASER assisited In-Situ Keratomileusis, so there is a Laser being used on your eye during the procedure. The doctors will make a "flap" of your cornea using a microkeratome and then apply the Laser to your cornea shaping it and correcting your vision. They carefully replace the flap and you're done. It is important after LASIK that you do not rub your eyes for a couple of weeks to let the flaps heal back to normal. Your doctor will provide shields for you to wear at night so you don't rub your eyes while you're sleeping.

The only really negatives that occur regularly are:
A) Dry eyes, if you have dry eyes prior to the procedure they will be more dry after the procedure.
B) Your correction isn't totally corrected - you may need an enhancement to get your vision perfect.
C) If you have Presbyopia (the need for reading glasses) and you have both eyes corrected for distance, you will still need reading glasses, you can talk to your doctor about possible Monovision or Mini-Monovision if you're just about 40 or over 40.

Laser Eye Surgery is for people with complications in their retinas, or Glaucoma. A Laser is applied either cauterizing blood vessels in a wide range of spots and sizes for retina. It can be used to open angles in narrow angle Glaucoma. It can also be applied to patients that have cloudiness after cataract surgery to remove cloudiness.

Q. As I understand it, LASIK involves cutting a flap out of your corneal layer (which can fold out again - *scary*!). However, PRK doesn't involve any cutting, but "re-shapes" the eye with lasers.

So are there any advantages to LASIK over PRK which makes the former so much more well-known and popular? Why doesn't everyone get PRK instead of LASIK?

PRK is not "better" than LASIK. they are just different.

LASIK has a significantly faster healing time, which is why it is more popular. most people can return to work/school seeing well & not in pain 2 days after LASIK. not so with PRK, which takes weeks to heal & is more uncomfortable. as you pointed out, PRK has no "flap", but it is much more likely to have corneal "haze" that needs to be treated.

each of them have their merits & disadvantages (there are more than i just listed). you should discuss your options with your doc. but its kind of silly IMO to announce that PRK is "better" than LASIK. i do not consider that to be true at all. theyre different.

both PRK & LASIK are significantly better than RK, which you likely not talk any US doc into performing on you in 2010

My each eye is -5 D and 0.5 astigmatic

I'm one of the 3% who aren't happy with it.

In my case, I think they cut a divit across the surface which can't be corrected (though I haven't checked in the last few years). This means that my eye sight is UNCORRECTABLE at around 20/60. Certainly a hell of a lot better than it was, but still not crisp. I miss having crisp vision (even if it did take glasses).

If I were you, I don't think I would use me as a huge reason not to do it:

1: I did it very early on when it was "bleeding edge" technology. In particular, they didn't have Wavefront technology for really clearly mapping the eye before they operate.

2: I had a horrible prescription to start with. I think now-a-days, they don't even offer Lasik as an option to people whose prescription is as bad as mine.

Never-the-less, it is a surgical procedure and surgical procedures do have risks. I think most of the "3 percenters" complain about poor night vision (the so called "rainy windshield" effect), but some have actually completely lost the vision in one or even both eyes.

But 97% are thrilled with it. Those are pretty good odds!

You may be interested to know that there is an alternative treatment for blurry vision called natural vision correction. It consists of specific eye exercises and techniques that can improve your eye sight and it's completely safe.

Did anyone else have to take eye drops before Lasik surgery?

My doctor gave me lubricating eye drops to take for a week before lasik because my right eye was a little dry. Now I'm worried if weather of not I should get lasik because of this. Throughout my life it never felt like my eyes are dry and I never use eye drops. Would u till get Lasik?

If this dry eye condition persists, you may have to medicate to improve tear duct function and use artificial tears to maintain the proper level of moisture. You must keep your eyes moist before and also after LASIK surgery in order to promote healing.

If you wear contact lenses, either soft contacts or rigid contacts, you should stop wearing your contacts at least three weeks before your initial evaluation by the doctor. On the day of surgery, you shouldn't wear makeup or perfumes. Also, don't wear any fuzzy clothing that is likely to disperse lint.

Make sure that someone goes with you on the day of surgery, since you'll need someone to drive you home after the LASIK procedure. Before the surgery, the doctor may give you medicine to relax you and your vision may be a little blurry immediately following surgery. Also, special eye drops are administered prior to the procedure which can cause additional, but temporary blurriness.

Q. I'm 20 years old and my eyesight is really bad (probably from all the years of video games, tv, and surfing the internet). I've decided to limit my time spent on these activities, but what I want to know is if there's a way to improve your eyesight without the use of glasses or contacts?

Also, I've heard from someone that people with astigmatism can't get that eye restoration surgery. Is that true? Not that I can afford it right now anyway, I just want to know my options later on.

A. There is no natural way to Improve eye sight. Dont fall for the advertising gimmicks.
Lasik works well for people with astigmatism.
