How much does Lasik eye surgery cost in Mexico? And is it safe there?

I have a cousin that got Lasik eye surgery in Mexico for about $400 for each eye. Is this a typical price in Mexico? In the U.S., prices are typically three times as much, like in the $1,500 to $2,000 range for each eye. I'm just a little hesitant doing any kind of surgery in Mexico.

I currently live in Dallas but I'm looking for affordable Lasik. Thanks

Stay away from mexico for any surgery. it costs more here because a Professional does it. it costs less in mexico because a wanna be US Citizen doctor does it.

I have seen a lot of advertisement for lasik quoting it at 299 per eye. Granted its based on your perscription but my eyes are equal in perscription and in good shape so it cant be more than 400 per eye. The thing is I cant see how Lasik eye surgery can be only eight hundred. It promises no hidden fees but how exactly can that be? I just would like to hear from somebody who has gone through the process and knows the answer.

If it is too good to be true, it is probably not true.

The problem with the $299 Lasik places is that there are so many restrictions on what is provided and who is eligible that the number almost never applies. Also, the only way any surgeon could provide Lasik at that price is to use equipment that is obsolete. It may still be FDA approved, but the technology is obsolete.

Without insurance Lasik costs about $1,950 per eye. The price of Lasik varies from about $1,600 to $3,200 per eye, depending on the surgeon and technology, according to David Harmon, president of the St. Louis research firm Market Scope.

Although these are the true costs for Lasik, discounts are common. Lasik doctors run specials on Lasik quite often, you can ocassionally purchase a Lasik Groupon, and our nonprofit organization provides a $1,500 grant to be used toward Lasik.

If I finance lasik eye surgery threw the clinic am I allowed to make payments to that account from my HSA?

I would like to use money in my HSA account to pay for Lasik eye surgery. I think I'm a little short in that account right now on what it will cost. The Clinics all offer financing some even at 0%. I'm wondering if I finance the surgery does the IRS allow me to use the money in the HSA to pay the loan payments?

Yes, Lasik surgery is approved for HSA (it's not considered plastic surgery).

Nothing else in our society is getting cheaper these days and as you know, the cost of living (and doctor's expenses-- staff, cost of laser, maintenance fee for the laser, royalty for the laser manufacturer every time the laser is used, rent will not be coming down anytime soon). I would not trust my eyes to a bargain basement dr. who flies in from out of town, does dozens of surgeries and then comes back in weeks. You need an established surgeon who isn't going to move out of town next month. Remember, LASIK is surgery. Not blood and guts surgery. But still surgery.

Can a beautician deduct the cost of Lasik eye surgery as business expense if it is business related?

Q. If a beautician wants to have the Lasik eye surgery done because the steamer always blurs her glass. Can she deduct the cost as business expense instead of medical expense since it is work related? Thanks.

A. Does not sound like the Lasik eye surgery would be a ordinary and necessary expense of the business operation.
A deduction is allowed only for expenses primarily paid for the prevention or alleviation of a physical or mental defect or illness. Medical care expenses include payments for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease, or treatment affecting any structure or function of the body. The cost of drugs is deductible only for drugs that require a prescription, except for insulin.
You may deduct only the amount by which your total medical care expenses for the year exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. You do this calculation on Form 1040 Schedule A in computing the amount deductible.
