Can LASIK eye surgery improve your eyesight to a certain percentage?

Q. I don't know if my perscription is too high to get LASIK eye surgery and end with 20/20 vision but can lasik improve my eye sight to a certain percentage so I won't have to pay full price? Also, will I have to bring both my contacts and glasses perscription with me to the consultation?

A. If your vision is so bad that they can't completely fix it using lasik, (they can usually do up to around -8 -10 or so, depends on how thick your corneas are). Paying all that money and still wearing glasses (although thinner ones) afterwards doesn't sound like a wise investment to me. I believe there are other eye treatments capable of correcting higher degrees of nearsightedness available that are worth checking out first. It couldn't hurt to bring the prescriptions, as that way, they will have an idea of what they are up against. If you decide to go ahead with the procedure they will do their own quite thorough scrutiny of your eyes beforehand.

How much does Lasik eye surgery cost in Mexico? And is it safe there?
Q. I have a cousin that got Lasik eye surgery in Mexico for about $400 for each eye. Is this a typical price in Mexico? In the U.S., prices are typically three times as much, like in the $1,500 to $2,000 range for each eye. I'm just a little hesitant doing any kind of surgery in Mexico.

I currently live in Dallas but I'm looking for affordable Lasik. Thanks

A. Stay away from mexico for any surgery. it costs more here because a Professional does it. it costs less in mexico because a wanna be US Citizen doctor does it.

How old do you have to be to have Lasik eye surgery?
Q. Can you be 16? If you do it at that age will it put you in any danger?
Is Lasik eye surgery permanent?! (will your vision be 20/20 all your life?!

also, if someone could tell me about how much it costs to have a congenital cataract remove, that'd be great!

A. Very permanent they cut a flap in the eye and use the laser under the flap then reposition it. You may never get 20/20 it all depends on your sight before surgery, laser eye surgery is designed to stop people having glasses, glasses are not giveb until your eyesight is below 16 so as long as they get it to that point.

And you hsve to be 18 and prices will depend entirely on the clinic. Go on the internet and read about it there are billions of pages about it.

Will laser eye surgery put the glasses industry out of business?
Q. Now that more and more people getting laser eye surgery, leaving the glasses they used to wear behind for good, do you think the glasses business will essentially go out of business?

A. I've been hearing that literally since before I graduated from optometry school in 2000. and I'm busier than EVER. why is that? a few reasons:

1) LASIK doesn't do all Rx's. many, many, many (most?) people THINK it does, but it does not. LASIK is very, very good at eliminating myopia & astigmatism. well thats good! thats half of all refractive errors! but only half. all the presbyopes & hyperopes are out of luck. oh! and so are myopes over -9.00 or so...they can't have LASIK, either. so thats another 5% or so less as well.

2) LASIK is expensive, the economy is bad and insurance doesn't pay. LASIK will never be super-cheap b/c the training is significant, the equipment is expensive and the lawyers are gonna sue your pants off if you foul it up, so the malpractice insurance is high

3) demand is low. all the people who were really, really interested in LASIK already got it. LASIK demand is literally at an all time low right now. you'd think that would drive the price down...but see #2.

so...no. glasses will always be around, and LASIK is not going to make any more of a dent in the number of people with refractive error than it already has.

people thought we'd all have flying cars by now too...
