Can you have laser eye surgery for astigmatism and is it effective?

Q. I would really like to have laser eye surgery for my astigmatism, because I hate wearing glasses when I play sport. I used to just take them off whilst sporting, but I started developing headaches.
I considered contacts, but my I worry about getting directly hit in the eye whilst wearing them(I'm a martial artist). So is there any effective eye surgery for astigmatism. Thanks guys.

A. In addition to treating nearsightedness and farsightedness, laser vision correction can treat astigmatism extremely well. Astigmatism is a blurriness of vision caused by the cornea being an irregular shape rather than perfectly round - a shape kind of like a football instead of a basketball. Today, we use advanced laser technology to make the corneal curve more even, eliminating the astigmatism. This results in clear, more natural vision.

What people dont realize is that glasses and contact lenses dont do a very good job of correcting astigmatism. Those who have LASIK to correct astigmatism often have a better quality of vision after surgery than before with glasses or contacts.

In the past, many patients were told by their eye doctor that they were not a candidate for LASIK because of their astigmatism. However, with advances in laser technology, we are now able to correct virtually all levels of astigmatism.

Its also worth mentioning that since youre a martial artist we would recommend PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) instead of LASIK. PRK corrects refractive errors the same way as LASIK, the only difference is that with PRK the surgeon does not create a corneal flap. This flap can be dislodged if the eye is struck, so for patients who are in professions where there is an elevated risk for eye trauma (martial arts, boxing, etc), we recommend PRK.

Hope that helps,

What is the age to get laser eye surgery?
Q. I'm wonder what age you can get laser eye surgery, i am hoping to do it right away.

A. LASIK is a laser based vision correction procedure where your vision can be corrected to such a degree that you no longer need corrective lenses. And the amazing part is that it all happens in just a few minutes!

But LASIK eye surgery isn't right for everyone. You need to meet certain requirements before submitting to LASIK eye surgery.

Here are a few of the guidelines used in determining if LASIK is a good choice for you -

* You should be over 18 years of age.
* Your corneas must be healthy.
* You should not have had a significant change in your lens prescription in the last 12 months.
* Women should not be pregnant or breastfeeding.
* You should be in good general health.

LASIK eye surgery can perform miracles - it can give you relief from wearing corrective lenses. It can cure nearsightedness, astigmatism and farsightedness. The procedure is quick and painless, offering almost immediate results. And due to advances in technology and the wide demand for this type of service, LASIK is quite economical.

LASIK eye surgery is now so common that millions of people have decided that it was time to abandon their corrective lenses, once and for all. There are so many LASIK clinics that you're likely to find one close by, no matter where you live.

All The Best For Your LASIK Eye Surgery...

I'm still pretty young and my eye vision is really bad. How can i improve my vision?
Q. If i get older you can do laser eye surgery. But some people can't i think because their eyes are too thin or something, is it true?
But are there any natural ways to improve too?
ill be chosing a best answer.

A. Too thin, no, not exactly...I think they are a little confused. What eye surgery usually does is remove a little piece of the cornea to change its shape, and thereby its focus. This is for myopia (nearsightedness). There's is an upper limit of myopia that can be corrected. It's much harder to correct hyperopia (farsightedness) because the reverse process needs to be done, the cornea needs to be more domed.

But surgery is the only option, because it is a structural defect. No supplement or exercise can possibly help.

How does Lasik Eye Surgery work? And would it be a bad idea if I got it done?
Q. I want to get it done because I'm sick of glasses. I tried to use contacts, but I cant put them in. I flinch when anything comes close to my eye, even if I'm the one doing it. I can barely even put eye drops in. Sad, I know. So I'm kind of scared to get it done because I dont want to flinch accidentally and screw everything up.

A. Most Lasik clinics and surgeons offer free evaluations so you can decide if you really want to commit to this procedure. To investigate the different procedures and find a list of questions to ask at your evaluation, please look into the links I have listed under "sources" at the end of my answer.

LASIK or Refractive Vision Correction surgery is laser surgery that can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. No one should have this surgery until they are absolutely sure their vision has stabilized, usually in your early to mid twenties, give or take several years. If you have the surgery prior to total vision stabilization, you will have to have the surgery repeated. LASIK is considered cosmetic surgery, is not covered by health insurance and can be quite expensive. Lasik is irreversible.

Anyone committing to Lasik must be prepared to accept the risks and side effects that are associated with this surgery. You must also thoroughly research your lasik surgeon and facility, the type Lasik procedure being preformed on your eyes and be very sure you are a good candidate for Lasik. Not everyone is.

Most people experience satisfactory to excellent post surgical results with an increase in visual acuity to between 20/20 to 20/40. The most common side effect of Lasik is irreversible dry eyes. However, there is a small percentage (about 5%) who experience night blindness, halos, star bursts and loss of vision. These side-effects are usually permanent and often cause depression and loss of quality of life issues See "Sources" below for additional information on Lasik procedures and side effects
