I'm 29, can I get medicare or some kind of free insurance?
Q. I have really bad eye sight, need surgery and trying to get help to pay for it...but my current PPO won't help at all..I'm needing eye surgery to help with a job..but no idea what to do...and I really have no credit to get a loan..I tried...any one know how I can get some kind of financial assistance..
A. You probably cannot get Medicare since "really bad eyesight" is most likely not considered a disability. If your income is below a certain level, you may be able to get Medicaid but they are usually very limited benefits. Eye surgeries are usually considered elective unless you have cataracts but at 29 that is not very common. Your best bet would be to call your local Dept of Health and see what options you have available.
Alternatively, there should be a place in your state called something similar to "Department for the Blind and Visually Impaired" which is what it is called here in Maine. They help everyday people who are blind or severely impaired with their eye doctor appointments, special appointments called "low vision exams", which includes instructions and testing out special equipment to help you function with the vision you do have left. They also do lighting and glare evaluations in your home to see if anything can be improved to help you see.
If you are considering Lasik or something similar, you probably will not get any help with it. Also, if glasses can remedy your situation but you just don't like them...you won't be getting help for that either. They only help the people that have no other option.
Good luck, though!
