Laser eye surgery; Lasek(PKR) vs. Lasik (intralase) vs. something else?
Q. I'm planning on getting my eyes corrected with laser eye-surgery
I'm nearsighted (-6.4 on both eyes) and I wear contacts. I smoke and for my job, and school I have to stare at a computer screen all day (with a 15 minute break every hours)
Which type of surgery is better for me?
Thanks

A. Hi, I was -5,25 and -5,50 in my both eyes. I was also questioning a lot, since there are many tecnical terms which I at last find myself lost in it.
I had my surgery with Dr.Nusret Bas, and made him explain all of my questions. So I believe these will help you.
- LASEK is a new version of PRK. It is better. So, do not get PRK, get LASEK. And lasek is good for people who are less than -2. If the patient do have a high degree, there is a risk of regression, which is the re-growth of the eye sight.
- Getting LASIK to that much of a high diopter is not good. Since, corneas are normally thin in this kind of high refractive errors, also the excimer laser treatment itself makes the cornea even more thinner. Since because in LASIK, the corneal flap is cut with microkeratome blade, it can not cut too thin. So, intralase is best of best. Intralase lasik is good for high dioptered eyes.
For Laser eye surgeries, there is a Q&A section in Dr.Bas's web site. It is quite good.

Eye prescription and laser eye surgery?
Q. I have a -5.75 prescription in my left, and a 5.25 in my right. Do I have really bad eyesight? Is it worse than most people's? And also, I have been wearing glasses since I was 7, I am 16 now and I wear contacts. What is the earliest age I can get laser eye surgery? Is there any way to improve my eyesight even a little bit?
A. You have a moderate Rx. Its not too bad but its on the border of strong - medium. LASIK is usually done in the early twenties and later. This is because the eye stops changing around then or at least slows considerably. You don't want to have surgery if your prescription changes every year because it will continue to do so even after surgery. Don't be too concerned even if your Rx gets a little worse, it will slow down. A few suggestions if you read a lot or on the computer. Give your eyes a break every 30 minutes or so.
Is it okay to wear contact lenses if the eye power is lower than your previous contact lenses?
Q. My eye power has been the same for the last 2 years. My left eye is -6.00 and my right eye is -5.25. I have always worn contacts with this prescription.
Recently I went to the doctor to get new prescriptions to refill my contacts. When I got my contacts, I realized my new prescription contacts is now -5.50 (left) and -5.00 (right). Did the doctor make an error, or is it still safe to wear them even though they are a tiny bit lower in vision power?
Thanks!

A. Well it's OKAY to wear them but the whole point of using lenses is to help you see better. Using lower power contacts wont effect you except that you might not be able to see as better as your old ones. Depending on why your eyes are bad depends on how your eyes became bad in the first place. Like if you use the computer a lot using contacts slows down the process of you eyes becoming worse. But your eyes cannot be fixed (unless through laser eye surgery). What I'm getting at is the doctor HAD to had maken a mistake. But also wearing contacts that aren't right for you can make your eyes worse Especially if the contacts are higher power than before. But I doubt they will effect you that bad but you still should get your regular prescription back. But like dr.patrick said, It can weaken your eye because of the low power since your eyes are used to the higher power.
How do you improve your vision naturally?
Q. I have myopia and my prescription is -5.25 for my right eye and -5.75 for my left eye. I need to improve my vision because I'm joining the air force.
I can't do laser surgery because it's bad for my eyes.
Is there a natural way to improve my vision?

there's so many ways to improve your vision,
since you are shortsighted, you will be surprised by improving your near vision will also improve your far vision, with -5.25D and 5.75D you are very likely to put a book close to your eye to read it, so by putting book further that what you can see and try reading it (not to far, meaning completely blur out) force your eye to focus and rest your eye, keep doing it, and once your can see the distance you place put it further, you will be very surprise your distance vision improved too.
