I heard you shouldn't have the surgery until your body's completely finished growing, like age 23 or something. Is there a prime age for this surgery? If you get it in your 20s will you have to get it again in your 60s?
Answer
Hi Namsen – 90% of patients between the age of 18 and 65 who are either nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism, are excellent candidates for the procedure. So there really isn’t a “prime age” for LASIK. Patients can typically have the procedure starting at the age of 18. By this age the eyes are done growing and changing so laser eye surgery can be performed safely. If you are 17 years old you could still be a candidate, but you’ll need parental consent.
LASIK is a permanent procedure. For the vast majority of patients, one treatment is all they need to correct common refractive errors. However, LASIK will not prevent natural age-related regression within the eye like presbyopia, the common eye condition which requires most people in their 40s – even those who have had LASIK – to start wearing reading glasses.
Hope this helped,

How long does the recovery take after having a LASIK eye surgery?
Alex Rodri
Also, do you feel ANY sort of pain during recovery or during the surgery? Or any point in time?
How old do you have to be to have the surgery?
One more thing, im joining the Army when i get older and i dont want to have to use glasses in it cause im so fed up with them now even. They get dirty, having to clean them, they get foggy, cant see through them when it rains, etc. Will the Army pay for the surgery if i choose to get it done?
Answer
Hi Alex – Recovery for LASIK is very quick, as all LASIK patients notice an immediate improvement in their vision within hours of their treatment. The following day, vision is dramatically improved, and most patients can return to work within 24 hours.
With regard to pain, patients are given a topical anesthetic (eye drops) to numb the eye, so they experience no pain during the procedure. When the surgeon applies the vacuum ring, the patient experiences a sensation of slight pressure just before his or her vision fades away for a few seconds. Neither the precision flap-making instrument--nor the laser cause any pain or discomfort. For several hours after the procedure, many patients describe a mild "foreign body" sensation, such as after opening the eyes while swimming in chlorinated water. Some people feel as though there is a dirty contact lens in their eye. After the first few hours, this uncomfortable feeling usually subsides.
LASIK MD offers up to $200 off the procedure for Canadian Armed Forces personnel, so you may be able to find a laser vision correction provider in the US that offers a similar discount.
