Do the Crest White strips work just as well and as fast as bleaching trays from the dentist?

Q. I am thinking of having veneers put on and I want my teeth to be the right shade before I have them put on. I really want to accompish all this in about 6 weeks is that possible? The color of my teeth arent very stained at all, I just need a couple shades brighter. Thats why I thought the white strips might work just as well as bleaching trays.

A. All whitening products contain peroxide either as carbamide peroxide (CP) or hydrogen peroxide (HP). Peroxide dissolves the organic stains in the tooth to change the color and produce a whitened effect.
There are four types of peroxide-containing tooth whitening products available:
* In-practice products are applied by a dental professional. These products contain a high percentage of CP or HP and are applied directly to the teeth. Some activated by heat, light, or laser. This may be the product for you if you're in a hurry for whiter teeth and you don't have tooth sensitivity. For very dark-colored teeth, the whitening process can be sped up in two to three hours followed by a take-home product until the desired whiteness is achieved.
* A take-home product supervised by a dentist is the most popular whitening method. These products contain a lesser percentage of CP or HP than in-practice products and are worn in a tray overnight or during the day at home. A custom-fitted tray is made to hold the whitening product directly against the teeth while lessening its contact with the gums. Some products have fluoride added to help prevent or treat mild tooth sensitivities. The typical stains of ageing will whiten in seven to fourteen days when the tray is worn overnight.
* Over-the-counter (OTC) whitening products contain a small percentage of HP or CP. Caution should be used with these products as many contain an acidic solution that can wear away tooth enamel. OTC products use a bulky, one-size-fits-all tray to hold the product. Usually more product is swallowed than stays in the tray because of the trays poor fit against the teeth. It can take up to six months and the purchase of several kits to get whiter teeth. Flexible strips coated with whitening gel have recently been introduced as an OTC at-home tooth whitening method. The strips are worn on the front teeth and folded over to keep them in place. Results are reported to be noticeable after fourteen days and effective for 6 months.
* Over-the-counter whitening toothpastes contain a small percentage of HP, CP, or polishing ingredient. The toothpastes are effective in keeping teeth cleaner and whiter looking but some may be very abrasive. The harsh abrasive will wear away the enamel with repeated use gradually making the teeth look yellow. Whitening toothpastes remove surface stains and prevent new stains from building up. Whitening toothpastes however aren't in contact with the teeth long enough to remove internal stains. Ask your dentist about the safety and cavity protection of specific toothpastes before you buy.

Why do dentists jack their costs so high?
Q. Before you flame, lets be reasonable here. We live in a society where you can get contacts and/or glasses cut in an hour or less. Where your eyes can be lasik'd for $750. Bones can be put into a sling and cast for $250. I recently had a surgery to fuse a disc in my neck which, after insurance, I paid a total of $75. $75!

These are teeth. Crowns, root canals, fillings, plates... ceramic and plastic. This is not a complicated process, folks. Yet since the pain can be worse than having a vertebrae fused, dentists know you will pay whatever it costs. It truly is ridiculous what they charge. And dental "insurance"...isnt.

It sometimes can cost less to fix your car than to get a root canal. Cheaper to fly to Las Vegas from NY than to get a crown put on. And forget serious dental issues. I can get an XRay of my back for damn near nothing, but $80 for XRays of my teeth?? Comeon...Yeah. They "care".
Maybe I should train as a dentist? So if I wanted to pay less at the gas pump, maybe I should just start my own oil company... geez..
Cost of equipment and staff should not have any bearing on the cost of procedure since other medical procedures have to pay often times MORE employees and equipment. Its costs far more to run a hosptial than a dental office. As an aside - hospitals will BILL you, but dentists wont even touch you unless you pay up. All the while knowing good and well that you are hurting terribly.
At this point, Im convinced that socialized healthcare is the answer. Odd that we care enough to socialize our education system, but not enough to provide medical care to everyone. In November Im voting for any democrat that will talk serious healthcare reform.

A. come to england it a hell of alot cheaper, but just remember dentist train for 5 years to get where they are,,
if u find it such a problem maybe u should re train as a dentist

Is their a possibility for a Root Canal Tooth to turn brown?
Q. I just got home from the dentist office and I was told that I needed a Porcaline Crown. In order to have that done my tooth had to be shaved down and I told them that I didn't want that done to my tooth so the Dentist just filled it again just like he would do to a cavity. After everything was done the assistant told me that their was a big possibility for the tooth that needed the crown to turn brown in 3 or more years. The lady left me thinking...What should I do should go back to the Dentist office and get the crown applied or I don't need to worry about my tooth turning brown. Please Help me I have a beautiful smile and a brown tooth would surely ruin it. GOD BLESS
I didn't go to the Dentist office in 3 years how come my tooth didn't turn brown then? Can is still be more years to come for my tooth to turn brown? I just don't want to have my tooth shaved down. I'm scared to have that done.

A. Root canals, from what I understand, are the result of decay within a given tooth that effect the nerve. In my case, I had a cavity that was really deep and even after I had a filling put in it continued to decay almost all the way to the jaw bone.

The explanation that I got from the dentist is that the nerve of my tooth had died and it needed to be removed as well as the decay and infection inside of my tooth.

Basically what he did was go inside my tooth, take all of the decay out, clean the four canals of my tooth, made a mold of my real tooth and then put a temporary cap back in my tooth. After a couple of weeks the permanent cap arrived in his office and he simply took off the temporary and replaced it with the permanent cap.

As far as the operation itself, I was given a local anestetic and I was awake through the whole thing. I felt no pain at all and I even drove home from the dentist's office.

I've had two root canal operations, one without dental insurance and one with it, and it can be very expensive. When I had it done without insurance the whole procedure, including the permanent cap, cost about $1,300. Believe me it was not fun to have to pay that but you need to have this operation done.

If you wait too long the tooth can become infected, like mine did, and it can spread to other parts of your body and cause serious complications. I waited about two and a half years before I finally had my second root canal done.

The quality of a root canal has to do with the dentist, his equipment, and his specialty. Root canals require crowns, so youre looking at a minimum of $1,000 in treatment. MINIMUM. However, if its a front tooth, youre pretty safe. If its a back tooth or decayed tooth then you should see a specialist and not just your regular dentist. Its only $200-300 more.
