Is it possible to see 3D if you blind in 1 eye?

Q. I was born with a cataract in my left eye that no one discovered till I was 7. I had corrective surgery & laser surgery but my brain never connected. Im 20 now and I haven't been to an eye doctor in 10 years. I was wondering if they have anything new that they are able to do. And I was wondering if you can still see 3D with only 1 eye.

A. Jmax is right, you need two points of vision to see depth. that's why with only one eye, it's easier to calculate depth if you rock your head back and forth.

Sitruc - depth isn't about light and darks, it's spatial orientation. lighting is irrelevant. you can still use logic and know if something is far away. but to see depth you need two reference points.

Do people have contact lenses implanted into their eyes?
Q. Do people have contact lenses implanted into their eyes as an alternative to laser eye surgery and is it safe?
I'm almost certain people have had this done.

A. There is a new procedure in which a corrective lens is placed under the cornea. It is showing promise in giving sharper results than laser correction. But the first patients are only 10 years out from surgery, so long term results are still uncertain.

I believe I heard this on Dr Dean Edell's show. He urged caution since it is so new and it does involve cutting into a healthy eye.

what is the best age of laser eye surgery?
Q. Howdy
my age is 23 now and my eye-side is still -2.25 for last 8 years. please guide me what is laser surgery and how it works, is it reliable?

A. Oh hi khurram!

Ive been wanting to tell people about this statistic for ages

Xingwu Zhong, Jian Ge, Haohui Nie, Xiaolian Chen, Juan Huang, and Nian Liu (2004) Effects of Photorefractive Keratectomy-Induced Defocus on Emmetropization of Infant Rhesus Monkeys. Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science 2004;45:3806-3811 (FULL TEXT)

PRK (a refractive surgery related to LASIK) on Rhesus monkeys created peripheral defocus that slowed or sped up myopia progression depending on the direction of defocus, as predicted.

This proves that monkeys who had laser eye surgery developed problems with their eyeballs changing shape later. The change in cornea shape triggered changes inside the eye and they could then develop further hyperopia/myopia in the years after surgery

can laser eye surgery work to reduce your prescription as well as cure you?
Q. My eyes are outside the range of laser/lasik surgery, I was wondering if the surgery can be used to reduce my prescription from a -12 to say a -6 or 8?

A. Yes it can.

See a decent opthalmic surgeon rather than a high street optician - although the normal range is up to -10 it can be possible to work on a 'worse' prescription depending on your needs and the overall condition of your eyes. The guy who did my eyes yesterday did cataract and laser correction surgery on an 80+ year old woman and got her MINUS 37 eyes up to -1.5 - pretty awesome!!
