The Lasik Recovery Process
As with any surgical procedure, with lasik surgery there is a post surgical recovery period. Prospective lasik patients want to know things such as how soon they can expect to return to work, whether glasses will be needed, whether any pain will be experienced and how soon after surgery vision improvement can be expected. While these questions should be thoroughly discussed with your eye doctor, this article will address some frequently asked questions about post lasik surgery recovery.
In terms of pain associated with lasik surgery, after the procedure you may feel a burning sensation or a gritty sort of scratchy feeling. This feeling may last for a few hours immediately following surgery. If you are able to rest or take a nap after the procedure, the feeling should subside and you should feel fine afterward.
Most lasik patients are able to return to their job full time the day after their surgery. An extra day or two out of work is generally not required, but if you are able it would not be a bad idea to relax and take it easy for a couple of days following treatment.
Obviously, the objective of having lasik surgery is to reduce or eliminate one's dependence on glasses or contact lenses. That does not mean, however, that someone who has had lasik will not benefit from wearing reading glasses or wearing glasses when driving at night. It is entirely possible that you will continue to wear glasses or corrective lenses on occassion as part of your recovery following lasik.
Every individual patient is different, but most notice improved vision almost immediately following surgery. You may experience some blurred vision, problems when reading or your vision may fluctuate but this is normal as it takes time for your vision to stabilize.
Knowing what to expect as well as what is and what is not normal following the lasik procedure is important for those considering lasik surgery. Your eye doctor will give you a more detailed overview of what to expect after your surgery as well as instructions for post surgical care. You'll be given guidance on contact sports, wearing sunglasses and even showering during the recovery period. Do not hesitate to ask your doctor any questions you may have and follow your doctor's advice religiously.
