Q. I am worried that by 20, my eyesight would become so bad that i cant have laser surgery. It is really bothering me and even the doctors told me not to wear contacts and i have to wear thick glasses all day. And also when your eyesight becomes higher, you get high eye blood pressure?

Answer
Your refractive error is well within the treatable range for Lasik, PRK, LASEK, and Epi-Lasik. Plus, and you have some room if your vision becomes worse.

You need to be at least 18 years old to have vision correction surgery, but what is more important is that you need to have stable vision. At least two consecutive years of less than 0.25 diopter of change. This is very important because you would not want to have surgery, then need to have it again in a couple of years because your vision has changed.

I recommend you be evaluated for laser eye surgery now, even though you do not meet age requirements. It may be that there is something about your eyes that would disqualify you or limit your options. Knowing this now can help you plan for the future. If all is well, in a couple of years you can be reevaluated for the real thing.

I have a question about medical waivers?

Q. I'm very interested in ROTC or West Point. My concern is my vision, -9.00 in left eye and -8.00 in right eye. I read that the military only accepts vision up to -8.00. Is that true? It is able to be corrected to 20/20 with glasses/contacts. Do I need a medical waiver?

Answer
There are different standards for each service branch and depending on whether a pilot, navigator or special forces etc. For instance, at the Naval Academy, the disqualifying limit is 6.00 diopters rather than 8.00 diopters as at West Point. You'd need a medical waiver.

From page 191 of the West Point Catalog:

"Refractive Error: Myopia over -8.00 diopters in spherical equivalent, or hyperopia over +8.00 diopters equivalent is disqualifying. Astigmatism over 3 diopters is disqualifying."

"Vision: Distant visual acuity not correctable to 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other eye is disqualifying."

"Refractive Surgery: Procedures to change the refraction (refractive surgery) including but not limited to: Lamellar and/or Penetrating Keratoplasty, Radial Keratotomy and Astigmatic Keratotomy is disqualifying. Refractive surgery performed with an Excimer Laser, including but not limited to, Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis (LASEK), and Laser- Assisted in situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is disqualifying if any of the follow conditions are met: The pre-operative refractive error exceeded +8.00 or -8.00 diopters (spherical equivalent) in either eye; pre-operative astigmatism exceeded 3.00 diopters; at least a six-month recovery period has not occurred between
last refractive surgery or augmenting procedure and DoDMERB medical exam; there have been complications and/or medications or ophthalmic solutions required; and post-surgical refraction in each eye is not stable.
