I would really like to have laser eye surgery for my astigmatism, because I hate wearing glasses when I play sport. I used to just take them off whilst sporting, but I started developing headaches.
I considered contacts, but my I worry about getting directly hit in the eye whilst wearing them(I'm a martial artist). So is there any effective eye surgery for astigmatism. Thanks guys.

Answer
In addition to treating nearsightedness and farsightedness, laser vision correction can treat astigmatism extremely well. Astigmatism is a blurriness of vision caused by the cornea being an irregular shape rather than perfectly round - a shape kind of like a football instead of a basketball. Today, we use advanced laser technology to make the corneal curve more even, eliminating the astigmatism. This results in clear, more natural vision.

What people don’t realize is that glasses and contact lenses don’t do a very good job of correcting astigmatism. Those who have LASIK to correct astigmatism often have a better quality of vision after surgery than before with glasses or contacts.

In the past, many patients were told by their eye doctor that they were not a candidate for LASIK because of their astigmatism. However, with advances in laser technology, we are now able to correct virtually all levels of astigmatism.

It’s also worth mentioning that since you’re a martial artist we would recommend PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) instead of LASIK. PRK corrects refractive errors the same way as LASIK, the only difference is that with PRK the surgeon does not create a corneal flap. This flap can be dislodged if the eye is struck, so for patients who are in professions where there is an elevated risk for eye trauma (martial arts, boxing, etc), we recommend PRK.

How much does lasik eye surgery cost?

Ibanez

What is the approximate cost of lasik eye vision correction surgery?

Answer
Hi Ash - The cost of LASIK or PRK can vary from anywhere between $500 per eye to $2000 per eye, and there are multiple reasons for the large range in price. Typically, the cost for patients with high prescriptions, hyperopia (farsightedness) or astigmatism is slightly higher than those with low or moderate myopia (nearsightedness). Technology is also a determining factor in the cost of the procedure. At LASIK MD, we offer Standard and Custom LASIK or PRK. Advanced Custom Wavefront offers better quality outcomes for those patients with high prescriptions, thin corneas and larger-than-average pupils. Custom LASIK requires technology that is costlier, and is therefore offered at a higher price.

The best way to find out if you’re a candidate is to undergo a preoperative consultation. LASIK MD offers free consultations, so try and find a laser vision correction centre near you that offers this service for free. LASIK MD also offers a Lowest Price Guarantee, so this is something else you may want to look for to ensure you’re getting the best price from your laser vision correction provider.
