eye laser examination faq?

Im just wondering what does it feel like getting your eyes lasered? How do you manage to keep your eyes still for them to redirect your focals? Cuzz im thinking they do a little bit at a time, or in a blink of an eye.... But seriously how do they do it and how do you manage not getting a botched eye laser exam.

Answer
Laser surgery has become far more advanced in the last 10 years. The success rate is around 99% with the most common "complication" being slight regression in refractive error - a second procedure is then preforms and is typically called "enhancement" so that it doesn't sound bad.

LASIK is currently the most common laser vision correction procedure. With LASIK a small flap is created in the cornea. This flap of tissue is lifted by the surgeon, the excimer laser is appled to the corneal stroma to correct refractive error, and the flap is replaced. During the procedure, a speculum is typically used keep the eyes open. Both eyes are done on the same day. Eye-tracking software is used with all modern lasers to avoid ablating the wrong area of the cornea and avoid "botched" surgery.

You won't feel a thing - the eye is numb for the procedure but the following days after surgery may be irritating. The corneal nerves are cut, which changes the normal sensation that stimulates tearing. Thus, the eyes become dry and feel gritty, sandy, etc. This can last for up to a year, but is usually quite tolerable.

Most surgeons will not operate on a patient until he/she is over 20 years of age. The reason is the refractive error of the patient must be stable prior to surgery. The upper limits for LASIK are around -10.00 to +6.00 and about -5.00 power for astigmatism, any axis. Pregnancy is a relative contraindication, as surgery can be preformed after nursing is completed.

Hope this helps.

Is eye laser advisable for someone who has an eye grade of 5.50?

Q. What are the advantages and disadvantages of eye laser? How much will it cost me for having this procedure? Does it hurt?

Answer
Most laser refractive surgery is recommended with people of 6.00 or less. So, this makes you on the edge. Lasik and other refractive surgeries or PRK or corneal rings are very safe. The best thing you can do if you are thinking about laser surgery is to really research the doctors in your area. Stay away from the people who claim it's so easy they can do it over your lunch break. There are some risks as with any surgery. Most practices have someone in charge of marketing and would be happy to either set you up with a free consultation with their corneal specialist or send you more information than you could ever dream of.

As far as cost, my practice charges just under $1,300 per eye. Pain is minimal and I have mostly heard it described as annoying achiness. There will be eye drops for a while afterwards, make sure you are okay with that.

Also keep in mind that not everyone is a good candidate for surgery. There are several tests required in determining whether you can have surgery. You have to have enough eye tissue, no dryness, etc.
