Just found out my dog has hip dysplasia in both hips?

Enchanted

Just found out my 2 yr old pit bull terrier Sheba has hip dysplasia in both hips. One side being a 10 and the other a 3. She will have to be on medication for the rest of her life so Im assuming this is why she was abandoned as a puppy on the side of the road, not to mention she has cataracts in both eyes as well. Again she's 2. We were told she'll have to be on pain meds as well as a joint supplement for the rest of her life. We were also told that she'll eventually get bone spurs and will need surgery. The first surgery she's already too old for, the 2nd would be a hip replacement and the 3rd would be to take out the ball joints If im not mistaken it's called Femoral head/Neck ostectomy. She runs like normal and acts like her silly self minus a few days of limping. Has anyone had this procedure on there dog done? Are there any long term effects if so what are they? Im looking for someone that has gone thru this with there fur baby so I can be fully knowledgeable so I can help her to the best of my ability so experiences and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. How long will she be able to go on like this? It breaks my heart to think one day I'll have to put her down because of her hips....Or does it just depend how well her meds work and or surgery? Thanks for any help I get its very greatly appreciated. Sheba thanks you too.

Answer
My GSD Maggie was diagnosed with HD at 18 months old. We put her on a joint supplement that day. It wasn't until she turned 6 that she had to have surgery. I opted to do the hip replacement because the FHO doesn't work as well on larger dogs. It was expensive; over 4 grand 7 years ago but worth every penny. For 5 years she could walk and run as if nothing was ever wrong. She'd still be fine except she has degenerative myelopathy, a neurological disease like MS. She now has issues getting around but the hip itself is fine. There's a long recovery period regardless of which surgery you go with. Just make sure the doctor who does it is an orthopedic specialist. Some regular vets will try to do these (especially FHO) and really screw them up. My friend has a Border Collie mix who had FHOs done on both sides 5 years ago. She has pretty bad arthritis already but she's also very fat so that doesn't help. So this doesn't turn into a novel I'll highlight what I think is important;
1. Get her on a supplement with glucosamine, chondroitin, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, MSM, yucca, and boswellia ASAP ( read labels carefully. lots of variation in quality)
2. Also supplement with fish oil
3. Make sure she is on a grain-free food or a raw diet (grains worsen arthritis)
4. Keep her lean. A couple pounds under is better than over
5. Moderate exercise will keep her muscles strong and better able to support a bad joint
6. Hydrotherapy or swimming is the best exercise. No concussion on the joints
7. If you can, explore alternative therapies like cold laser and accupuncture for pain management
8. Don't start pain meds until she needs them
9. For pain, try adequan or tramadol before NSAIDS like Rimadyl
10. When NSAIDS are necessary, give milk thistle supplement to support the liver
11. When the time comes for surgery, do total hip rather than FHO if at all possible
12. After surgery, continue with the supplements, exercise, etc
13. I give Maggie a back/hip/thigh massage nightly
Hopefully this is helpful. By doing everything above, I've Managed to keep Maggie with me for a long time. She was 13 on May 22. Good luck with your girl.
