Lasik surgery is where they create a flap on your cornea, roll it back, and pulse laser beams to re-shape your cornea flatter, thus making light waves reach your eye the way it SHOULD be, so that you don't need glasses/contacts anymore. It takes 2 days to heal. Great if you're a candidate.
Cost depends where you go - if you're in canada, you can get it cheap around 300/eye. If you go to the higher end places, probably 2500/eye. Go to a place whose Dr. has done many patients and have some sort of program where they'll touch it up if it changes.

One more thing, im joining the Army when i get older and i dont want to have to use glasses in it cause im so fed up with them now even. They get dirty, having to clean them, they get foggy, cant see through them when it rains, etc. Will the Army pay for the surgery if i choose to get it done?

I am 43 years old and would like to have it done so I don't need to wear reading glasses and have another pair for long distance. I also have one lazy eye. Will lasik work for that eye too?

I had lasik done last year, at 42, for moderate to severe (20/675) myopia. I'm a hair away from 20/20 now, and am very pleased.
If you see an experienced surgeon and are screened for risk factors for the surgery, there should be very little risk of a bad result. Of all the people I know, only one has had a problem afterwards, and that was chronically dry eyes. However, she had it done 6 years ago with a blade, not laser, and was told she was borderline (too flat an angle) for the surgery anyway.
The lazy eye can be done if the laziness is not too severe. You'd have to be examined by the doctor to know for sure.
I don't know where you are, but I had my eyes done in Canada. They are 5 years ahead of the USA as far as lasik experience, and it cost half of what it would have cost here.

A surgeon’s specialized training and surgical experience are all very important. Look for a clinic that performs a lot of surgeries, because more procedures means more experience – and more experience means better results. Try to also find a centre that specializes in LASIK.

It’s also worth noting that it’s virtually impossible to go blind from LASIK.

Usually it won't be done until you're prescription has stabilised - young people who are short sighted generally continue becoming more short sighted until about their mid-late twenties. Once this stops laser surgery will work wonders until you need reading glasses in your late forties. Really it depends on the individual though.

A. It has been around just over 10 years in the US and Canada, but has been around for 20 years in Russia and England.

There have been no long term side effects registered yet.

Aside from those who had to have it redone because the myopia came back....or had to go back to glasses because the surgery couldn't be done a second time for different reasons.
