Answer
33% of all initial claims are approved. Some are approved at the reconsideration level. 40% to 60% of those who go to a hearing are approved. Therefore, I would have to say that you and your boyfriend haven't been approved because you don't meet the requirements for disability which is that your medical conditions in conjunction with your age, education and work experience makes you unable to earn $1010 a month in ANY type of work activity.
Just because your boyfriend is Type 1 diabetic doesn't mean he is disabled. Heck, I had a brother-in-law who had been Type 1 diabetic since he was a four year old and that didn't stop him from becoming an attorney and working right up until the last year of his life when his kidneys failed him and he suffered severe heart damage. My office had two type 1 diabetics working in it; one of them still is and he was on dialysis, had a kidney transplant, lost one eye due to his diabetes and part of a foot. HE IS STILL WORKING. The other one was actually in the middle of an interview when she lost her eyesight. She was out of work for six months having laser treatments and lens implants before she was finally able to return to work but she returned to work and continued working until she was old enough to retire. So just how does your boyfriend's health stack up to that? When his kidneys fail him or he loses his eyesight or suffers SEVERE heart damage or loss of limbs because of neuropathy THEN he will be considered to be disabled and unable to work.
Now for you. Guess I don't understand how having two rods along side each spine is disabling. I have a close friend who just had two rods inserted a year ago this summer and she told me her back now feels the best it's felt in over forty years. Just because you have a back condition doesn't make it a disability. The world is full of people who have back problems requiring surgery who work; I had back surgery in 1975, suffered chronic back pain from then to now and continued to work for another 25 years. I also worked with other employees who had back surgery or suffered from severe back pain.
I suggest that you and your boyfriend get an attitude adjustment and get yourselves a job.

the doctor told me eye surgery will not help me unless I patch, is this true?
Q. I went into target for Vision exam knowing my left eye is very blurry and I basically read and do things relying mostly on my right eye. I asked her about my options for eye surgery and she said it was no point. She said eye surgery only improves your vision to the most possible best vision in my eyes. And since my corrected vision is 20 60 and 25 65 without glasses (not sure if I put order right but yes left eye is the worst one), then Laser surgery will only allow me to not have to wear glasses to see 20 60. I was stunned, I was under the impression surgery would make my eye completely better. She kept saying that my eye is perfectly healthy so its just a weak muscle in my eye or something like that that I may have simply been born with, no incident neccessary, and I need to exercise and get working again. She said although i'm 20 maybe I can start patching and within 5 or 6 years my left eye will get a little stronger but still no use in eye surgery. Ive gotten 3-4 different eye doctor opinions that kind of match what she told me. They all say my eye is healthy so it must be a muscle thing, but I only thought about eye surgery as an option until recently so I never asked any of the other doctors their opinions to compare with hers. Anyone else have a similar situation or specialize in this field who can give me anymore info on whether she is correct or not?
Answer
this is a common misconception. LASIK *only* removes refractive error. that's it. that's all it does and that's all it has ever done. and it doesn't even work on over half of refractive errors! LASIK does not not not make any eye "completely better". it never has.
and
patching is unlikely to work in a 20 year old.
