Is laser treatment for correcting vision is advisable at the age 45 years or after?

Farooq

Answer
Yes.

LASIK laser vision correction surgery can be performed on a patient as long as they are over the age of 18. Some of the things that will disqualify you as a candidate for the procedure is a pre-existing eye condition such as Cataracts, Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, Severe Dry Eye Syndrome, or Kerataconus. However, LASIK can be performed on someone who has already had cataract surgery. I have seen patients as old as 75 or 80 getting it done. I think if it will improve the quality of your life, go for it!!

There are a few other deciding factors to determine candidacy as well such as certain medications you are currently or have previously taken, medical conditions, your prescription, the thickness of your corneas, and the overall health of your eyes.

Now one thing to know is that your age could determine your final outcome of the surgery. Once a person turns about the age of 40, they start to lose their focusing abilities to see up close. This is why as you get older, you may notice that you have to hold reading material further away from you. When 'your arms just don't seem long enough anymore' is when you can transition into a pair of reading glasses or bifocals to help you see up close. This is called Presbyopia. It happens to everyone--sometimes earlier than others but it always happens. It's just the eye muscles weakening and losing their ability to accommodate.

So, you have 2 options. Laser vision correction is normally intended to give you the best distance vision possible. This is one of your options but you will need to still wear reading glasses (you can buy them over the counter at the drugstore) to see up close. Some people don't like this option because they feel as though they've been wearing glasses their whole life and they just don't want to have to put another pair on ever again. Which is fine and understandable but leaves us with our second and last option. Mono vision. Mono vision is where one eye can be corrected for distance and the other for up close. Your dominant eye (the eye you would normally shoot a gun with or take a picture with) will be corrected for distance. The non-dominant eye will not be corrected to the full extent, leaving it a little weakened but will help your ability to see up close. Mono vision can be tricky and everyone does NOT always like it. It's important to discuss this with your doctor before your surgery so they can put a mock pair of glasses with the mono vision prescription on you so you can see what it will be like. It can leave you with eye strain or headache, dizziness, or the feeling of being off balance. This is normal and is obviously your body's way of telling you that it doesn't like the mono vision. It's not for everyone, gets mixed reviews, and is kind of a 'love it or hate it' type thing--no in between. The good thing about mono vision though, is that it can be fixed if you decide that you don't like it. Because the non-dominant eye is originally not corrected to the full extent, it's as simple as going back in for another quick surgery known as an enhancement, which will restore the non-dominant eye to it's full correction. So, this puts you back to option 1 which is getting both eyes corrected for distance and wearing reading glasses afterwards for reading.

LASIK can be a very hard and life changing decision. Make sure you do your research before you go somewhere. Many places offer free consultations which will let you know whether or not you are a candidate for the procedure, the cost, and financing options. Word of mouth is any company's best advertisement. Ask around to people you know where they had their laser vision correction done or if they know anyone who had it done. Be an informed patient and make informed decisions!

I hope the mono vision explanation wasn't too confusing. It can be without a physical example. I hope you enjoy your final decision! Best of luck to you!
