i just found out tat my 11 year old nephew got laser eye surgery and his eye sight wasn't bad bad, it was -4. i think that is a bad idea because the only reason he got it because he kept bugging his mom and dad about it and he is really spoiled cause he start wearing contact lenses at 10 years old while i have to waited until i was 18. what do you think about the surgery. stupid?

Answer
No reputable Ophthalmologist would preform Lasik (refractive vision corrective surgery) on an 11 year old. Perhaps the parents are pulling your leg. If this is true, the parents are not very bright. There can be many side effects from Lasik surgery, the least of which is chronic dry eyes and the worst of which is loss of vision. No one should have this surgery until their vision has been stable for at least 2 years, usually between the age of 18-25. The surgery will have to be repeated when the boy is older and since vision does change, he may start to have problems with his vision within a few years.

EDIT: fyi: LASIK or Refractive Vision Correction surgery is laser surgery that can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism and both eyes are done at the same time. No one should have this surgery until they are absolutely sure their vision has stabilized, usually in your early to mid twenties, give or take several years. If you have the surgery prior to total vision stabilization, you will have to have the surgery repeated. LASIK is surgery and has many of the inherent risks of any surgery. Prior to committing to this surgery, you must do your homework and be willing incur the risks and side effects associated with this surgery. LASIK is considered cosmetic surgery, is seldom, if ever, covered by health insurance and can be quite expensive. Lasik is irreversible.
Anyone contemplating LASIK surgery must research the procedure thoroughly and ask lots of questions of your surgeon. You must check out your ophthalmic surgeon thoroughly and be sure that you are a good candidate. Prior to committing to Lasik, you must be sure you are willing to incur the risks and side effects associated with Lasik, the least of which is chronic dry eye. Although most people who have had LASIK have satisfactory to excellent results, those that do not suffer irreversible damage including halos, star bursts, night blindness and moderate to severe visual impairment.

is laser eye surgery a good idea for a 23-year-old?

i can't find my glasses right now and i'm wondering if laser surgery would be better than getting new glasses or contact lenses.

thanks

Answer
I got Lasik done when I was 18. I had no problems at all having it done and I love it. I could see better than 20/20. Now I am 24 and I can tell that my eyesight is starting to go bad again. I know eventually I'll either have to get the surgery again or go back to glasses/contacts. I would probably do the surgery again, because it's such an amazing thing to not have to worry about glasses or contacts. You should try it, but like everyone else said, find a good doctor to do it!
