Where is there a good place to go to for laser eye surgery?

bruinssig

I am considering getting laser eye surgery because I am extremely near-sighted having a 7 or greater strength in both eyes with one eye needing a cylinder strength. However, I am a little nervous about the place I am going to. They offered a place to get drinks while I was there and when the procedure is done, both eyes are done on the same day. Now, I am thinking, "They must be having trouble attracting business if they are offering drinks to people", and, isn't it common procedure to do only one eye at a time when doing laser eye surgery in case something goes wrong? Would anyone know of a good, reputable place in Massachusetts close to the suburbs of Boston to go to for laser eye surgery?
I was also reading one other question on Yahoo questions answers and someone mentioned there is also a procedure using soundwaves to correct eye problems. Does anyone know anything about this procedure?

Answer
I had Lasik eye surgery 2years ago and I have never regretted it. I had both eyes done at the same time and had no problems whatsoever and my eyesight is still perfect.

I am in the UK so dont know about companies in the US but make sure you shop around. All companies have promotions (mine said £395 per eye but once I had consultations and tests I finally paid £1095 per eye) - so dont be tempted by offers or free things your eyes are very important.

All I can recommend is checking out customer feedback from companies and just go to a few consultations to suss them all out. Also dont settle for the cheapest - this is not always the best for you.

Good luck - it is the best thing I have ever done and you will not regret it

How do I wear my boston gas permeable contact lenses more comfortably?

ycantibhap

I'm 51 years old, have dry eyes from allergies and sometimes sinus pressure. I wore contacts since I was 19, but for the last 4 or 5 years they have become unbearable to wear. I was considering Lasik but because my eyes are dry to begin with, I wouldn't want to make them even more dry from the surgery. My doctor didn't recommend soft contacts...I think he would have if I were able to but I am very nearsighted. I think my prescription is a -7.

Answer
I had a similar situation. I switched to soft lenses last year after 30 years of wearing hard lenses or gas perms. It got so I could barely tolerate wearing hard lenses, and my eyes were always bloodshot.

If I were you I would go back and ask about soft lenses. They are SO much more comfortable. I don't think my vision is as sharp as before, but it's a tradeoff I'm willing to make. And, no, you're not too nearsighted. I was -8.5 last year and backed off to -8.0 in my right eye. My left eye is undercorrected with -7.0 for reading.

There are a couple things you can do for dry eyes, and I'm a little surprised that your eye doctor didn't mention them. First, there's a prescription eye drop, Restasis, that is supposed to help with tear production. It's expensive and takes about a month to take effect. (The benefit I got from it didn't justify the cost, so I stopped taking it.) The second thing you can do is have your tear ducts plugged. It doesn't help with tear production, but it prevents them from draining away so quickly. They do a trial with a plug made of collagen to see if it will work for you (the collagen plug will eventually dissolve). If that helps, you can have a more permanent plug installed. I haven't needed to have this done, but I'd be willing to give it a try. It is not a new procedure.

My advice is to go back to the doctor and press for better answers. If they can't offer suggestions like I've mentioned above, you need to find another eye doctor. You've got too many years to live!

p.s. In order to get surgery, you will need to stop wearing hard lenses in order to let your corneas stabilize. During this time, your prescription can go all over the place. The process can take months if you've worn hard lenses for many years. I went through this when I switched to soft lenses. It was a pain in the neck, but I'm glad I did it.

For non-Yankee and Phillies fans......?

What does your team need to focus on this offseason? Do they need to improve their offense or defense? Is there a big free agent that you think your team should go after? How important is this offseason? Tell me your thoughts on what you think your team can do to improve from last year.

BQ: What teams will Jason Bay and Matt Holliday sign with?

Answer
I'm a Braves fan. They need to improve offense(more power) and some defense(less errors). Though most of those errors were either by:
a. Chipper Jones
b. Yunel Escober
c. A blown call

I don't there is any "big" free agent they are after. Perhaps a closer. I've been keeping an eye on the Braves website, it only looks as though they are looking to trade Lowe and/or Kawakami, and get Adam LaRoche back or another first baseman.

The offseason is very important. It's, basically, when the whole team is put together.

I would like to see Derek Lowe traded, and Kris Medlen in the starting rotation next year. I would like to see Greg Norton gone, and Adam LaRoche re-signed. Matt Diaz needs to have more playing time next year.

Frank Wren needs to go out and get us a (real) closer, resign Tim Hudson, and try Jason Heyward out this spring. The Pitching Rotation is looking pretty good, as of now(if everything goes how I think it will).

~Jair Jurrjens
~Tim Hudson
~Tommy Hanson
~Kris Medlen

Offense, is fair I guess. Some days, it seems, the Braves could hit their butts off, and others they can't get anything. They left so many men on base..it made me so mad. Hopefully Brian McCann can play alittle better next year(not that he did all that bad). He got lasik eye surgery again, so he shouldn't have to wear glasses.

The Line-up is looking pretty good. I think Martin Prado should play more, probaly second base. I think Frank Wren could trade one of the Braves many prospects to get a good closer. They have so many outfield prospects, that are Major League ready.

The batting order, I think, will look something like this:
Nate McLouth(CF)
Martin Pardo(2B)
Chipper Jones(3B)
Brian McCann(C)
Adam LaRoche(1B)
Yunel Escober(SS)
Matt Diaz(LF)
Jason Heyward/Garrett Anderson(RF)

BQ: I think Bay will probaly stay in Boston. Holliday will probaly go to the Yankees, Red Sox, or another team with alot of money.

Does anyone know any personal experiences or information on laser vision correction?

maryjane

It is something that I really want to get but I don't have a lot of money. What is the average price in the boston area? and do you think they will let you finance it?

Answer
I had PRK a little over a month ago.

I researched my surgeon thoroughly...started with three in my area where I had recommendations from my optometrist and a corneal specialist I work for. I mean, I looked up EVERYTHING I could about them...price for me was not as important as education, experience, their failure/complication rates.

The national average is about $1300 to $2100 per eye, depending on the technology. My hubby had LASIK a couple of weeks before I did and he did finance his. I used my credit card. Funny part...they would not accept CASH!

My husband and I attribute our success to the education and experience of our surgeon...and he wasn't the cheapest, but not the most expensive either. $3400 for him and $4000 for me before our vision insurance discount.

The link below has a lot of information about vision correction procedures...and I put the link from their site to surgeons in Boston. That is most likely NOT the only ones there, but it's a place to start.

For my hubby and I, having our surgeries was a great experience with wonderful results....all due to our surgeon and following our postop instructions very carefully.

i am thinking of doing Lasik eye operation. At the same time very petrified of the risk, pain, etc.?

Q. Would love to hear your opinions /experiences.

Answer
I had laser eye correction surgery three years ago, and I LOVE it. I had had glasses from the age of 4, and couldn't wear contacts, so I was just amazed at being able to see.
I had PRK surgery, which is a predecessor to LASIK. In LASIK, they pull back a layer of cornea and shoot the laser onto the eye, but in PRK, they laser through the cornea. With PRK it takes longer to heal, but it was necessary for me because I had had cornea injuries. So I can't tell you what it's like to have the cornea pulled back, but I will say a few things about corrective surgery in general:

Be picky about who you have do it. I don't know where you live, but I'm in Boston, so I was able to have a man do my surgery who's one of the best in the world at laser surgery...which is awesome. It might be worth it to go to a nearby city to a doctor with a good reputation, who's done lots of LASIK and eye surgery procedures if possible. Make sure you feel comfortable with his or her demeanor and level of professionalism. Ask the people working in the office if they have had eye surgery, and if yes, who performed it. If everyone in his or her office had it done somewhere else, or hesitates to say that they WOULD have it done by this doctor, that's a sign that you should go elsewhere.

Talk to the doctor about what will happen if it doesn't take. Some people's eyes continue to deteriorate even after a successful surgery. My doctor had a policy that if I went to see him once a year for five years, if my eyes got worse within ten years he would do a touch-up for free. Since I was paying $2500 for the procedure, it was a big deal to know my eyesight was guaranteed.

Don't worry! If you are comfortable with your doctor, and your doctor is experienced, things will go fine. As to the procedure itself: it is kind of weird. Did you ever see "A Clockwork Orange" where they have a little device that holds the man's eye open and they drop little eye drops into it to keep it moist? They use that device to keep your eye open, so you can't blink and screw it up, and in my procedure they had a red light I had to stare at while they were lasering me. They lay you back in a reclining chair, and you look up at the light and the asering device. I have never, ever concentrated so hard on a light, because I was worried about moving my eye and screwing things up, but it didn't take long at all, before I knew it it was over. They gave me a Valium before I had it done, so I was actually not too anxious, and they put numbing drops in your eye, so it doesn't hurt at the time at all. Again, I'm not sure about LASIK, but I had a few days of healing for my eye, and they gave me Tylenol with codeine to help with the pain. I could definitely feel when it was time for me to take another pain pill, but the pain was completely bearable. It's nothing to really fear.

Now I have perfect vision in both my eyes, and I have to say, I am so so so so happy that I got my eye surgery. I hope you can face your fears an get it, too. Good luck!
